How often should I come for sessions?
Many clients feel they like to come in every week to achieve some momentum in the therapy process, and after some time begin to come in every two weeks. Some clients like to come in each two weeks from the beginning. The frequency of sessions is usually a personal matter and I encourage clients to choose the pace that works best for them. During your introductory appointment, we can discuss scheduling and the timing of appointments.
Do you take clients who are covered by insurance?
As on my contact + fees page, if prospective clients are covered by insurance through their workplace or extended health care plans, it is important to carefully check if psychotherapy provided by a Registered Psychotherapist is covered by your plan.
What if my partner wants to come to see you as well?
At times during the therapy process, and as a result of a mutual decision on the part of both client and myself, we will invite a partner or family member to attend our session if doing so is in the best interests of the client. Besides that, if partners or family members wish to begin therapy themselves, to avoid a conflict of interest I will provide referral names to other therapists.
I have never been for any kind of counselling or therapy before. Is there anything particular I should know or do before starting to see you as my therapist?
No, there is nothing particular you need to do but bring yourself in whatever state you happen to be in to the appointment at the scheduled time. Starting therapy can sometimes be daunting for new clients – and it can feel like a big step. Experience has shown me that clients tend to settle into the process early on and already in the introductory session begin to feel more at home. There is no rush to the sessions, and nothing happens outside of your own pace.
Do you have a cancellation policy?
Yes, and we can review this during the introductory appointment as well. If clients need to cancel a scheduled appointment for any reason, I require a full 24 hours notice. For appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours notice, the full session fee is charged.
Do you hold therapy sessions over the phone?
The short answer to this is no, I do not conduct therapy sessions over the phone in general. However, if an established client is traveling and requires support while outside of Toronto, a phone appointment can be made and is held at the regular in-office fee.
When is the best time to reach you to make an appointment?
I can be reached at any time by email, and generally respond to emails on the same day or within 24 hours. I respond to phone messages as soon as possible. Once in touch, a 10-minute phone call (at no charge) gives us the chance to see how I might be able to help you.
